Taneycomo Sculpin-1 Taneycomo Sculpin Taneycomo Sculpin-2

Russ Doughty, a MTFA member, was showing me how to tie one of his favorite flies – the Taneycomo Sculpin.  This fly was originally developed and tied by Brad Wright for Taneycomo.  Russ fishes it on a long lead 12’ or longer.  He strips the fly.  It is one, one-two strips, let rest, then strip, strip, strip, rest ……….  Russ catches a lot of fish, so when he talks about a fly he ties and uses – I listen.

This is a more expensive fly to tie.  I would estimate the out of pocket cost per fly will be in the $0.52 to $0.63 range.  The hook – $0.08 to $0.10, the Presentation Lead Eyes 10 pack will cost $2.00 to $2.25 or $0.20 to $0.23 per fly, they Charcoal Rabbit Strips package, 4 strip 12 inches long will cost $3.00.  If you cut 3 or 4 inches long for each fly that will be $0.19 to $0.25 and your hackle feather estimate $0.05.
